Fungie is an adult male bottlenose dolphin who took up residence in the mouth of the harbour in Dingle Co Kerry, SW Ireland in 1984. He is totally wild and free and catches his own fish and is self sufficient in everyway. He is fully mature weighing approx 350kg and measuring about 3.7 metres from beak to tail. He can swim at up to 25mph. No one knows where he came from, how long he will stay or even how old he is! He shows greats interests in boats which use the harbour and regularly swims alongside them. He can be very playful, but shows great sensitivity despite his considerable size and strength. He is always gentle and careful with children or nervous people. I met Fungie Sunday 7th June 1992, he came up to the boat and was very friendly but most of all very nosey! He played with our small boat for a while, leaping at the sides but most of all was the eye contact we had with him. It was an experience looking into the eyes of a wild dolphin and i have treasured spending that time with him ever since.
