THE BLOWHOLE

Dolphins have one blowhole which is located at the top of the dolphins head, through which they breath through. Dolphins cant breath under water, they need to come to the surface to take their breath. The nostril is their blowhole and only opens when it reaches the surface and then closes when the dolphin dives back down holding its breath. A dolphin can holds its breath under water for up to 30 minutes at one time.

The relaxation of the muscle allows the flap to close into a water tight seal.
